A Note from Gary Wilkerson

WE WERE MADE FOR SO MUCH MORE.

As God’s children, we’ve been given a full and glorious inheritance. Yet many are leading lives that are far below what God intended. Discouragement, defeat, despair, dismay—that isn’t the life he meant for any of us. I have good news for you this year: Jesus has freed you to move beyond an existence that’s “lesser than” and into a better life. This is what Ephesians 3:20 is all about: “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think” (NLT). More than we might ask or think? That’s huge, that’s extravagant, that’s God! This is a year not to be under-whelmed, but rather overwhelmed with all the resources of heaven available to us. And they are available right now through the promises of God.

What does it mean to live a better life? It doesn’t mean a life of selfish gain or self-promotion, looking out for our own interests. That’s actually a lesser life, and those who pursue it eventually find how unsatisfying and empty it is. A better life is one that’s full of Jesus, full of love, full of the power of the Holy Spirit—a life lived fully with his plans and purposes in mind. A better life is also counterintuitive, because our greatest thoughts about it always fall short of God’s highest calling for us. It is a life lived for the benefit of others—and it makes a better world.

In fact, the world is a lesser or greater place based on how you live. Live well, and the world around you has more salt and light. But ignore the destiny God has for you, and the world suffers for it. So, never again let the evil one lie to you that your life is meaningless or insignificant. Your life matters to others—because it counts in making a better world for others.

This year we are calling you to the greatness Jesus has prepared for you. And he tells us very clearly how to become great: by serving others. “Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant” (Luke 22:26).

When we grow the way God has in mind for us— spiritually, emotionally, and socially—we become better prepared to make the world a better place. One day when we’re in heaven, all will finally be made well—but until then, our divine mandate on earth matters: that is, to bring the kingdom of God to bear on all pain, sorrow, and suffering. World Challenge exists to help you fulfill your God-given destiny. This daily calendar is packed with scriptural mandates, promises, and empowering encouragement. What a year this is going to be—your best ever! Have faith; nothing is impossible with God. Go with him into your better life— and to make a better world.
