Listen to podcast audio:
Kelly Wilkerson and Deanne Ward join Dr. Mark Mayfield on the Gary Wilkerson Podcast to talk about supporting loved ones who are struggling with addiction. Looking to their own stories and personal experiences, they discuss how the church sometimes isn’t prepared to help with mental health issues and how Christians can be well informed, supportive friends.
Key Points from the Podcast
-
The church should be a safe place for people who are struggling with sin, addiction, and mental health issues but it is often a cruel and condemning place.
-
Much of the church is not prepared, equipped, or educated to help those struggling with addiction and mental health issues.
-
The Bible is not meant to be a weapon against other believers but against the enemies of God. Scripture should be used to draw people to a deeper relationship with God and others.
-
As Christians we often dismiss emotions or try to cover them with Bible verses rather than confronting them.
-
Important factors in helping those who are struggling are to slow down, be fully present and listen, especially in our busy and distracted modern culture.
-
Caring for our own souls is a vital part of helping others care for their souls.
-
It is important for pastors and leaders to have people with whom they can be vulnerable without fear of judgment or gossip.
