When we hear the word ‘hermeneutics,’ we may be tempted to dismiss it as a term for Bible professors or pastors, but it’s important for all believers. In this week’s episode, Gary Wilkerson and Joshua West discuss what exactly hermeneutics are and how every Christian should know how to use this biblical discipline. As we continue to study scripture and see how it reveals God’s nature, we will find the Bible an increasingly deep and beautiful text.
Key Points from the Podcast
• Hermeneutics is the process of making sure that we have an accurate interpretation and understanding of what scripture says. Ensuring that we have a correct understanding of the Bible takes study and hard work.
• Distinguishing between allegory, andromorphic language or literal commands is an important skill to develop while we read scripture.
• The historical context and meanings of certain words as used during that time period can help immensely with understanding certain parts of God’s Word.
• What the Bible says, it means. Outside of perhaps apocalyptic language and prophesy, the Bible does not have ‘hidden’ meanings or messages for believers. It was written to be understood and applied to our lives.
• If we take a verse out of context, its meaning could be misinterpreted and turned to mean all kinds of things. That misunderstanding of scripture could cause great pain to us and others.
• God clarifies his commands with other parts of the scriptures; the Bible interprets itself with New Testament passages building on Old Testament passages and providing greater context.
• We must be careful to not create allegories out of portions of scripture that are not meant to be read in such a way. Superimposing our beliefs or ideas about God onto the Bible, even unintentionally, can cause a great deal of confusion and harm.
