Listen to podcast audio:
The Holy Spirit can be the one person of the Trinity that is difficult to wrap our mind around. In some churches he is ignored, while in others the Spirit is overemphasized. Fred Sanders joins Gary Wilkerson to discuss the role of the Holy Spirit in the Trinity and in the believer’s life.
Key Points from the Podcast
-
The relation between the Father and the Son, by their very names, can be easier to understand than the relation of the Holy Spirit to the Father and the Son.
-
The Holy Spirit’s relationship to humanity is one of indwelling—he comes and lives in the hearts of believers.
-
The doctrine of inseparable operations teaches that any outward action of the Trinity involves all three persons of the Trinity—Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
-
The Father, within the Trinity, is the source of both the Son and the Spirit.
-
Since the Holy Spirit lives in us and is never separate from the Father and the Son, they also dwell within us.
-
There may be things we know to be true about the Spirit that we haven’t yet experienced in our walk with God.
-
Our experience of the Holy Spirit must align with how he functions in scripture.
-
We cannot separate the Holy Spirit from the work of salvation. He isn’t something that comes after conversion but is actively involved in bringing a sinner to Christ.
-
Many in the church today seem to be looking for a visitation of the Spirit when they already have a habitation of the Spirit.
-
There is a danger of making either too much or too little of the Holy Spirit.
